USA: The first medicine derived from cannabis approved
For the first time, the USA allowed a medicine derived from cannabis : Epidiolex is a drug treating two kind of severe epileptic seizures affecting children. This medicine is based with purified cannabidiol which is one of the 80 active elements of cannabis. “This medical progress is huge” according to Scott Gottlieb, director of FDA (Food and Drug Administration). “But it is very important to highlight the fact it isn’t an authorization of cannabis itself and of all its components.” Of course, it is only addressed to one specific CBD medicine, destined to a specific use.
Numerous clinic trials enabled to obtain this authorization: Epidiolex will be prescribed to treat Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes. CBD doesn’t provoke euphoria, THC does give this sensation and that is why this authorization doesn’t change the federal interdiction.
